Why is Lithium used in batteries ?

Lithium battery illustration

Laptops were once huge and heavy. Lithium batteries made them compact and sleek. Lithium is placed third in the periodic table, only after Hydrogen and Helium. It is the lightest metal. It is a good conductorof electricity, as it allows current to pass through. This is because lithium atoms have one free electron. Lithium's low atomic weight and high ability to let electricity pass through makes it a perfect choice for batteries. A small Lithium battery can store high electric charge... which is the perfect choice for small, yet powerful batteries.

Caution: Defective Lithium ion batteries run the risk of exploding. So, we are on the search for safe designs and safer materials.
